Head Coach Alese Woolard talks with her team during the game last week against Fort Hays. The Lions went on to win the game.

Missouri Southern’s women’s soccer team celebrated its first two wins of the season this weekend. The teams paired wins were 2-1 over Fort Hays, and a 3-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney.

These wins bring the team’s season to 2-5-1 so far.

“This weekend was really exciting for us. We have a good group this year with good freshman. This weekend we finally clicked as a team,” Samantha Zoltanski, sophomore defender said.

Alese Woolard, Head Coach of the women’s soccer team, agrees with Zoltanski.

“The on-field chemistry usually strengthens as you get further and further into the season.

“The players did a good job adjusting our style to the turf.  It is obvious that the players are becoming more comfortable with each other and are able to play off each other and anticipate where their teammate is going to be,” Woolard said.

Megan Stueve, senior forward, brought the team 3 of the 3 goals they had in defeating Nebraska-Kearney.

“This [double win] is a big stepping stone for us. We gave it all we had and we didn’t give up. We kept pushing the ball forward and played as a team,” Stueve said.

Stueve has also been celebrating a win of her own for her role in helping the team to both wins this weekend.

She has been named the MIAA Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for last week.

“It’s such a huge honor. It’s awesome and I’m very thankful,” Stueve said.

The double win is a milestone this season for the team, but there is still a long way to go according to Woolard.

“We have 8 more conference games ahead of us. There are no easy games from here on out. That’s what is so difficult about this conference.

“Any team can win on any given day.  Our goal is to step ourselves up the best we can to get a good seat in the conference tournament,” Woolard said.

“We really want to make a statement in conference this year and prove to everyone that we can do it,” Stueve said.
