The Missouri Southern track and field team was back in action last weekend with members competing at the Southwest Baptist University Classic in Bolivar and the Emporia Relays in Kansas. The delegation sent to Bolivar managed to pick up three wins while the Lion throwers delivered two provisional tosses from junior teammates Derek Webb in the Javelin and Nicklas Polizzi in the discus.

“Our guys are cooking really well right now,” said head coach Bryan Schiding. “We’re in a good position right now to improve, we have so much talent on this team.”

Senior jumper Darion Boure won the triple jump at SBU with a provisional distance of 48-04.00 after placing fifth in the long jump. Despite the victory, Boure was not happy with his performance.

“I felt like I could have done better,” said Boure. “This is an eye-opener. I need to step up and put on my big boy shoes and compete like I used to. I need to get back that same intensity that I used to have, training with 110 percent every day.” Boure set the school record in the triple jump last season after leaping an unprecedented distance of 51-75; he also holds the indoor track record as well.

“Track and field is one of those sports where it doesn’t all need to happen at once,” said Schiding. “You expect really good and not so great at the same meets. You can expect mediocrity at some of the meets, but what you look for is improvement both from a mental and a physical aspect. I think right now the team is in a position to be successful when they need to be, which is at conference and nationals.”

Elsewhere, junior sprinter Erron Holley snagged a win in the 100 meters in his first outdoor meet after sitting out an entire season with a medical redshirt. He went on to place third in the 200 meters.

“I ran a lot faster my freshman year, but this gives me a starting point, knowing where I’m at and where I want to be,” said Holley. “I have a faster time in me for sure.”

Senior Jazz Allen rounded out the trio of Lion winners with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles; he also claimed sixth in the 200m.

“I felt pretty good,” said Allen. “We prepared well for the weekend, so anything less than a dub wasn’t in the plan.”

The Lions are ready for the seventh Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, which takes place tomorrow.
