Missouri Southern women’s soccer team got it’s much anticipated season underway last week as the Lions hit the road to take on Drury and Missouri Science & Technology.

Drury marked the season opener for the Lions as the traveled to Springfield.

Drury shutout the Lions last season in the season opener 2-0.

The Lions, with revenge on their minds were shut out again by the Panthers of Drury, 4-0.

Drury would rattle off three goals in the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Shawnee Phillips was making her collegiate debut as a goalkeeper. The Panthers would tack on another goal in the 71st minute to secure a victory.

The Lions only took four shots in the matchup, two being on goal. Three shots came from sophomore midfielder Taylor Beck and one shot from junior Kelly Sutton.

Phillips logged all 90 minutes in the net, allowing four goals and coming up with another four saves.

“Against Drury we did not play our game,” said senior Hannah Ishmael. “We deserved to lose that game.”

That’s back to back shutouts at the hands of Drury for the Lions.

After shaking off a poor performance in the season opener, the Lions would see Missouri S&T in the second game of the season. Missouri S&T scored the lone goal of the game in the 28th minute. For the remainder of the game, the Lions controlled the game and forced several opportunities to tie the game. In the 36th minute senior Karley Thomas had a shot sail just left of the goal post.

In the second half, the Lions would have three more opportunities. Sophomore Hannah Bomar had her shot saved.

Seniors Kimmy Hulse and Ishmael would also fall victim to great goalkeeping as Missouri S&T goalie Carrie Levy came up with two more big saves.

Missouri S&T would squeak past the Lions with a 1-0 victory.

Thomas and Ishmael had two shots each, Bomar and Hulse both added one.

Phillips recorded all 90 minutes again at the net as she came up with three saves to equal seven total in two matchups.

“I believe we should be 1-1,” said Ishmael. “Against Mo S&T we dominated the last 15 minutes and it sucks that we didn’t get a goal.”

The Lions play their next three games at Hal Bodon field. After starting the season 0-2, the Lions will be looking to rebound at home where they’re most comfortable.

“These next three games are crucial,” said Ishmael. “These next three games will test all aspects of our team.”

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow against Newman University at 3 p.m.
