A local bar is changing its image to suit a younger crowd.

Adam Giebler, owner of The Tropicana, said when he bought the bar it was an “old man hangout.” Now he features live music at least three nights a week.

“We’re always looking for original musicians,” said Jason Kinney, Tropicana bartender. “We have everything from blues to reggae.”

Currently the Tropicana plays host to a slew of music events every week. Every Wednesday is The Karltens. Thursdays are open mic nights hosted either by Giebler, Kinney or Josh Mullen. And Fridays and Saturdays offer a wide range of musicians.

“I’m not guaranteeing anything but usually Wednesday through Saturday there is some type of music going on here,” Giebler said.

But music isn’t the only reason to go to The Tropicana.

“We’ve got some of the best pub grub you’re going to find anywhere,” Giebler said. “Saturday morning we have hangover breakfast. It’s made specifically for people who don’t want to get up at eight in the morning to go get breakfast.”

That’s why Giebler serves his Saturday hangover breakfast until 1 p.m. It features everything from homemade biscuits and gravy to omelets to the Jumpin’ Johesephat, a “Ginormous breakfast burrito filled with three meats, three eggs, tons of veggies, jalapenos and lots of cheddar cheese.”

The kitchen’s normal hours are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“It’s all homemade stuff with huge portions and it’s really cheap,” Giebler said. “It’s serious stuff. You get a quesadilla from us and it’ll fill you up for two days.”

On top of all of that, Giebler said his bar has the cheapest happy hour beers around. Featuring special prices on the 180-ounce ‘Tower of Beer,’ domestic or premium, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day. Unfortunately for some, The Tropicana only serves Budweiser products on tap.

But no worries because if a Bud or a Bud Light won’t quench that thirst Giebler has a few premium beers that will. Currently on tap is Shock Top, ESP RedRock and Beach Bum Blonde Ale. The Blonde Ale is seasonal. However, Budweiser’s Pumpkin Spice will be replacing it as soon as what’s on hand runs out.

“This place is a good time,” Giebler said. “If you want to get stinkin’ drunk for cheap come to The Tropicana.”
