Can we afford what we need

University President Bruce Speck called it.

In an interview about the possibility of adding a new vice president for University advancement Speck said “he could hear the criticism already.”

The Chart hadn’t even published the story yet and we were hearing ‘criticism,’ (to put it mildly) about a University that is already a tad top heavy adding yet another $100,000 per-year administrator.

However, one can hardly argue that the purpose the new vice president will serve isn’t needed.

In theory, the new vice president would oversee the Missouri Southern Foundation, Alumni Association and University Relations and Marketing. Curt Bettebenner, executive director of the Foundation, agrees that the new vice president is both essential and the norm at other schools and that Southern is already behind the times.

We’re just wondering how many couch cushions it will take to fund the new job.
