Senate hears first resolutions

After its third formal meeting this semester, things are beginning to get underway for Student Senate.

Senate meetings this semester have not been as structured as in the past, a fact that Parliamentarian Alesha Gilleland partly attributes to the meeting held in Spiva Library the past two weeks because of a power outage in the Billingsly Student Center.

President Will Lynch said in the past years, meetings had been hectic.

“I think that parliamentary-wise we’re following the rules a lot better than we have been in the past,” Lynch said. “In terms of what’s being brought before Student Senate we had our first resolutions this week, we had our first appropriation requests this week

“I think it’s going to be a very productive year regardless of how things may seem about relaxed or not relaxed.”

Among the resolutions presented for a first reading was one to establish a public Web site for student accessibility.

Lynch said he hasn’t heard many comments about what students want to see done in Student Senate, but having a Web site might encourage students to speak out about what they want to see accomplished.

“I think that anytime that we can create communication between senators and students, [their] voice will be out there more, and we’ll be able to hear more and pass resolutions back,” he said.

The Vacancy Committee met with three students to fill Senate vacancies this week. Cody Sprague, freshman political science major, Tosha Aleck, freshman political science major, and Becky Head, junior international studies major, were all voted in at the meeting. International student Ruth Eichinger, sophomore, who had met with the committee last week, was also voted in.

Treasurer reports for Student Senate announced the current budget at $22,547.77 in funds.
