Man with one leg rides bicycle 150 miles in two days
Waiting for the race start, Steve balances with his bicycle. His bike has only the right pedal. Steve said, “I’m not thinking of 150 miles. My goal is to get up the next hill. It’s one hill, one pedal at a time. That’s how life is.”
The Smiths from Lebanon, Missouri, decided to take on a family adventure. The family signed up to ride in the Bike MS 2013 Ozarks Ride on September 7 and 8. The event raised funds to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The riders chose the distance they were willing to ride. The Smiths chose the regular route, which required riding 75 miles each day. Steve Smith, 48, has only one leg. He rode with his wife, Lynn and their son Cody, 13. Their oldest son, Brandon, 17, drove their family vehicle, carrying supplies.
It is estimated that over 900 cyclists started the ride at Clever High School in Clever, Mo., on Saturday. The first day concluded and the second day began at Schifferdecker Park in Joplin. Sunday morning, participants rode back to Clever. The Smiths completed the entire race route, totaling 150 miles.
