Senate raises funds for annual philanthropy event

Once a year, Student Senate hosts its St. Baldrick’s event in Young Gymnasium, but numerous tasks and responsibilities must be handled behind the scenes for the event to be a success.

“It’s been a rat race,” said Senator Kyle Deese.

Senate Vice President Brooklyn Lampe has spearheaded the planning of the event, taking the reins from her sister, Brittany Lampe, who had done most of the groundwork the past two years before graduating in May.

“St. Baldrick’s is important to me because it has made such an impact over the last five years,” said Lampe. “Two years ago when I first got involved with Student Senate I had the opportunity to meet the daughter of an alum that has cancer. Cancer has always been a strong [subject] with me because I have had numerous family members with cancer.”

From selling bracelets for $2 to running informational booths at Missouri Southern sporting events, Senate members have done their best to make sure the campus community and the city of Joplin are aware of St. Baldrick’s. To add incentive for senators to sell bracelets, they will keep track of who moves the most.

“We are going to challenge every senator to sell at least ten bracelets — just get out there and spread the word,” said Treasurer Ashleigh Thomlinson.

Members of the community can get involved through a number of outlets.

“People can get involved on the St. Baldricks Website, stbaldricks.org. Currently, our event is not live, but we are expecting it to be up very soon,” said Lampe. “They can also drop by Student Senate’s office during office hours for more information on getting involved.”

The St. Baldrick’s charity serves as Senate’s philanthropy event, with the ultimate goal being to raise money to be donated for research of childhood cancer.

“At the event, people shave their heads to show their support for cancer patients going through Chemotherapy who lose their hair,” said Lampe.

Senator Kendric Carlock has already received two donations from area businesses, one of those being Chuck E. Cheese. The brand’s mascot will be in attendance at the event, according to Lampe.

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 25th, from 6:30-9:00 in Young Gymnasium. The event will also feature music, food, games and a silent auction to accompany the shaves.
