Lady Lions head to KC for MIAA

The last non-tournament game of the season rolled to an end on Feb. 29 with a disappointed group of Lady Lions.

The women traveled to Washburn University to challenge the Lady Blues for the second time this season. The women suffered their second loss to Washburn, 61-55.

“I think we went into that game really positive in the first half,” said junior guard Katie Deen. “We played hard but came up short.”

Freshman guard Carol Koenig was moved from point guard to a scoring position in the game.

“I had the green light to shoot, and it was working for me,” Koenig said.

Her green light allowed her to lead the team in point scoring with 21 points.

Southern finished the first half ahead 34-32 but allowed Washburn an additional 29 points in the second half giving them the six point win.

“Washburn is a really great team; we had our chances to win but in the end we missed,” Koenig said.

“We just didn’t finish our shots.”

The Lady Lions stood at a 15-14 season record as they headed into the Sonic/MIAA Championship in Kansas City. The semifinals take place on Saturday followed by the women’s championship on Sunday.

“We are pretty positive and we are planning on winning it,” Deen said.

Along with the Lady Lions, the bracket includes Truman State University, Washburn University, Northwest Missouri State University, Southwest Baptist University, Missouri Western State College, Pittsburg State University and Emporia State University.

“I really feel like we can win this tournament,” Koenig said. “With support we can go out with a bang. Anyone can do it.”

The women are hoping to see many Lady Lion and Lion fans at the tournament to finish out the year. The Lady Lions played on March 6.

A win will advance the Ladies to Saturday. A win on Saturday will advance the team to the finals on Sunday. Tip off times vary throughout the weekend.
