Senators plan trip to Jefferson City

Low attendance plagued the Student Senate again on Feb. 9.

With several Senate seats vacated, Senate met its quorum with only 14 senators and four officers present.

Also, the time limit is over for students to join the Senate.

Treasurer Kelli Friga noted the Senate has $16,840 left in the budget at the beginning of the meeting.

During the meeting, senators allocated $1,000 to the Model United Nations. Some debate came up during the allocation because the organization had monetary issues last semester.

However, the speaker, junior international studies major Caleb Gallemore, said the organization had the issue straightened out.

Senators also recognized the Tsunami Relief Committee, which it organized to decide where funds should go from Senate donations.

The committee had three organizations picked out, but only presented two because one member was absent. Because there were three organizations picked, senators discussed the reliability and efficiency of the organizations.

Netza Smith, senior accounting major, said one organization, the North Western Medical Teams, would accept money for tsunami relief with plans for the next nine months.

Other organizations were also discussed, but there was no definite decision to be made.

“Either of these are good options,” Smith said.

The senate decided to table the discussion and allow the committee to make a final decision at the next business meeting on Feb. 23.

“I’m really proud of the Tsunami Relief Committee because of all the work they put into researching the charities,” said Senate president Eric Ducommun.

Ducommun said he thinks the Senate will make the right decision with the money it will donate.

Also during the meeting, the question arose of possibly looking into adding parking meters to several parking places behind Spiva Library.

The question came from the Traffic Appeals committee.

Ducommun said the Senate would consider the idea and wait for further details from a committee formed after the idea arose.

Senate will not meet in its regular session next week. Senators will be headed to Jefferson City for their annual capital trip.

Two sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday have been scheduled for senators to talk with state representatives.

The Senate will return to its regular meeting time on Feb. 23.
