Drawing large crowds to any school event can be difficult, but the Oval was full for the Pitt State Pep Rally on Sept. 14.

Students dressed in green and gold and flanked by the band, cheerleaders and dance squad, ringed the Oval to cheer Southern’s football and volleyball teams to victory.

“Turnout was really good,” said Carolyn White, senior biology major and CAB president. “Its always hard to have a pep rally at noon on a Friday because so many students have class.”

“It’s great to see all the enthusiasm of the students,” said Dr. Terri Agee, acting University president, “We hope to build on this throughout the year.”

Students lined up for free ice cream and CAB members got the crowd excited by throwing out free T-shirts.

School spirit has been on the agenda at every CAB meeting this semester and the pep rally, hosted by CAB, was an opportunity to get students excited.

“Its always great to see so much support for Southern sports teams,” White said.

During its weekly meeting, CAB not only geared up for the pep rally, but Homecoming activities as well.

Homecoming week is Oct. 8 through 13, and CAB, along with other groups on campus, has various activities planned for students. White discussed both day and evening activities for Homecoming during the CAB meeting. Day activities include holographic photos on Tuesday, Oct. 9 and a picnic Friday Oct. 13 in the Oval.

At the picnic, Southern students can design spin-art Frisbees and race though an obstacle course. Other activities include a bungee run, inflatable twister and several Dance, Dance Revolution machines. Students, faculty and staff can also enjoy free food, ice cream and fun.

Night activities during Homecoming week include Southern Impact’s Skate Night at Skate Land in Webb City at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and a bachelor/bachelorette auction at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Webster Hall auditorium.

Zeta Tau Alpha’s Open Mic Night will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Lions’ Den, and a block party with bonfire is planned for Friday, Oct. 12 on the corner of Duquesne and Newman Roads.
