Senate proposes resolutions

Resolutions, new members and appropriations for three student groups were approved during this week’s Student Senate meeting.

The seven new members of the Senate are: Niki Ansel, senior international business major, Matthew Baum; sophomore criminal justice major, Joseph Karr; senior international business major; Jeremy Nance, sophomore communications-speech major; Gwynavere Roberts, senior German major; Cameron Smith, sophomore nursing major; and Amanda Van Lue, junior health promotion and wellness major.

Senate allocated $1,000 each to W.I.S.E. (World Issues for Study by Educators), the Model United Nations Club, and SADHA (Student American Dental Hygiene Association) for educational trips.

Senate also brought some resolutions to the table.

The Crossroads resolution, proposed last semester to remove the portion of student activities fee funding Crossroads, failed.

A resolution titled “Fun Time,” proposes that checkerboards and chessboards be placed at the first-floor desk of Spiva Library, was passed. Supporters of the resolution think it would generate more activity on campus.

“I know this is a place for education, but people need some time off,” said Boryana Georgieva, junior marketing and German major.

The Martin Luther King Day resolution, recommending no class on the holiday, was passed.

“Students pay to learn,” said Senate President Tim Fisher, senior history major. “If class goes on without them, then they have to choose between one of the other.”

A resolution regarding the extension of library hours was discussed. It asked the library stay open later for commuting students and students taking online classes. The resolution failed.

The Dropped Class Policy resolution, recommending Missouri Southern re-evaluate its fee drop policy, was passed.
