Volleyball Lions stay afloat in ‘tough’ MIAA

The Lions’ volleyball team is coming off a 2-2 showing at the UCO Bronco/Fairfield Inn Invitational, last weekend, Sept. 11 and 12. Wins against Central Oklahoma and St. Edwards in the tournament bring the Lions’ record to 5-4 overall with a tough conference slate starting this week.

“We probably have the toughest conference in the country,” said Volleyball Head Coach Chris Willis. “There are six of the teams ranked in the top 25 this week, and we play three of them in the next 10 days.”

Tonight starts the test for the Lions, as they travel to Warrensburg to take on the Jennies of the University of Central Missouri (11-3), a team that made the regional round of last year’s national championship.

“It’s a great opportunity to play the best teams in the country,” said Willis. “Central Missouri is always one of the most well- rounded teams in the conference.

“They lead the conference in blocking, digs per game, and really they just don’t make many errors.”

The Lions will need to get in front early, and play their own well rounded volleyball to have a chance tonight.

“We can’t give them points,” Willis said. “We have to take the game to them, and set the tone on the court.”
