Dance classes teach moves

Over next few weeks, those who enjoy social activities can take advantage of a weekly chance to interact with people while learning some impressive moves.

Social dance classes, taught by instructor Judy Schneider, are held on Thursdays each week. Sessions last six weeks, and two classes are offered each session. Students have the option of taking one class for $60, or both classes for $100.

The next classes offered are salsa and swing dance, returning by request.

“It’s just a fun environment to be in,” said Schneider, who has a M.A. in dance, along with 33 years teaching experience dance. “There’s just so much that I really love. First of all, I love to dance. It’s always [been] something I wanted to do.”

Schneider began teaching social dancing classes in May, and said they are great for those who enjoy getting out and meeting new people. The classes are located in the old Ernie Williams building at 611 Main St. in Joplin and are open to the public.

“I have [a student] as young as 12,” she said. Fathers with daughters, mothers with sons, and couples as well as singles also make up her classes.

“It’s good to learn something new and to enjoy being with who you’re with,” she said.

Schneider said social dancing is different from ballroom dancing.

“You learn a lot of steps in a dance and you really concentrate on leading and following, because you should be able to dance with anyone, experienced or not,” she said.

Classes run every Thursday, Sept. 24 thru Oct. 29, with the Salsa class from 6:30-7:30 p.m. followed by the swing dance class from 7:45-8:45 p.m. For registration or more information, call (417) 642-5491.
