MSSU gets bids for roof project

Next Tuesday Missouri Southern is expecting bids for a roofing project involving Webster Hall and Hughes Stadium.

Last week in a pre-bid meeting, six contractors looked at the project. The University began working on gathering bids early to ensure they get on a contractors summer schedule.

“They will not start the work until after July 1 because this is actually part of next year’s budget,” said Bob Harrington, director of the physical plant.

Harrington said reroofing the buildings is part of Southern’s regular maintenance.

“We do an evaluation of all the roofs on campus every year and do a priority listing, and we do basically one roof a year to keep everything caught up and this is the one next in line that was most needed,” Harrington said.

Recent projects include Plaster, Taylor and Hearnes Halls.

The reroofing project will be centered around Corley Auditorium and the western part of Hughes above the concession stands and restrooms. Harrington said he believes the stadium still has the original roof and Corley’s hasn’t been redone in close to 20 years.

Other reroofing projects are on order as well.

“This year we’ll actually do three of the apartment buildings that have not had new roofs on them yet and we’re going to do those three after July 1 also, but they’re shingle roofs,” Harrington said.

The apartment building will be in the plant’s operating budget as a separate expense.
