Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) design students displayed their artworks at Joplin’s Post Art Library through an exhibit highlighting the historic “Little Blue Books.” The exhibition opened with a reception Oct. 16, and then wrapped up Oct. 31.
The “Little Blue Books” were pocket-sized booklets aimed at making reading more accessible more than 100 years ago. The student’s artwork modernized the books and highlighted their historical value.
Jill Halbach, the Art Library Director, emphasized the importance of utilizing art to exchange knowledge to a broader audience.
“The exhibition allows us to share local artwork with the public, which not only benefits the students but allows the community to engage in historical learning,” Halbach said. “The engagement builds a connection between public interest and academic endeavors, merging the past in a way that’s accessible to all.”
The event allowed students to build networking opportunities and gain insight into a design career.
Lacey Nix, a MSSU design student whose work was on display, shared how she felt seeing her work showcased and the lessons she learned during the process.
“I felt a good mix of pride, excitement, and nerves when I saw my work on display,” Nix said. “This experience taught me how to put my emotions aside to finish a project to meet the deadline, and appreciate the skills I learned as they will help me in my journey as a designer.”
Danya Walker, owner of the “Little Blue Books” displayed at the library, purchased two designs from students to go along with her collection, showcasing the positive response to the exhibit.
