Battery explodes in air handler room of Billingsly

8:45 a.m.

A member of the grounds crew contacted security after seeing a black 1998 Chevy with one of its side windows broken out and glass scattered across the ground.

Security was able to contact the owner of the truck, who said his wallet, checkbook and speakers were missing from the vehicle.

The victim contacted the Joplin Police Department, which took a report on the incident.

4:10 p.m.

Security was contacted in response to a parked car, which had been keyed. The victim said she had parked her car at 8:30 a.m., and when she came back at 3 p.m., there was a scratch mark across the front left fender.

Security advised the victim to contact the Joplin Police Department.

Injured Person

3:30 p.m.

A female victim contacted security saying she had slipped and fallen on the ice while returning to her vehicle, fracturing her ring finger.

She was taken to Freeman Health System where she received 15 stitches.

Hazardous Materials

9:48 a.m.

Mechanical Maintenance contacted the security office regarding a battery that had exploded in the Billingsly Student Center, Room 115. Security used a compound to neutralize the acid and sealed the battery in a plastic bag.

Security contacted Battery Outfitters, who agreed to dispose of the battery for no charge.
