Senior forward Tera Reisner works the ball down the field during the Oct. 24 game against Emporia State University. The Lions won the game 2-1.

One on the road and one at home were added to the Missouri Southern Women’s soccer team’s win column last weekend.

On Oct. 22, the Lions traveled to Warrensburg and defeated the Central Missouri State University Jennies 3-1.

“I think [the game against CMSU] was one of our best group efforts this season,” said Erin Gfeller, freshman midfielder.

Trevor Wachsman, head women’s soccer coach, said the team played really well against CMSU.

Erin Whelan, freshman midfielder/forward, scored the first goal in the fourth minute, assisted by Tera Reisner, senior forward, and a second assist by Sarah Sneed, senior midfielder.

CMSU tied the game in the 21st minute, but Reisner put the Lions back ahead with an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute. Lauren Kurelac, freshman forward, topped off the score with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute.

“We’ve had a great group effort,” Wachsman said.

He said the team has several minor injuries, but everyone has played hard.

Whelan and Reisner both scored again during the Oct. 24 game against Emporia State University played at Bodon Field.

Their goals gave the Lions the 2-1 victory over the Hornets, with some help from senior goalkeeper Alese Woolard.

Whelan scored only 33 seconds into the game. Reisner’s goal came in the 32nd minute off an assist from Kurelac.

“Tera always works really hard up front for us,” Gfeller said.

Woolard stopped a well-placed shot by pushing it over the crossbar in the final 15 seconds of the game.

Gfeller and Wachsman both said Woolard’s save was great.

“Overall it was a good team effort for us,” Gfeller said.

Southern traveled to Maryville Oct. 27. The Lions lost to the Northwest Missouri State University 2-1.

Gfeller scored Southern’s only goal in the 64th minute, unassisted.

The Lions have three games remaining in the regular season, all of which take place at Bodon Field.

The next game will be Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. when the Lions take on Southwest Baptist University. Rockhurst University comes to play the Lions Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. The final home game in the regular season will be against Central Missouri State at 2p.m.

Both Gfeller and Wachsman said the final games will all be tough for the team.
