Tennis provides one team win, several double victories

The swing of the rackets, the shuffling of feet and the yells of the players were all heard while Missouri Southern competed in the Central Oklahoma Broncho Tournament in Edmond, Okla., on April 15-17.

The Lions’ only team victory was against the home team, the University of Central Oklahoma.

In doubles play they defeated the Bronchos 2-1.

On April 15 the combo of sophomore Barb Gombosi and freshman Michelle Hall defeated UCO’s Kimak and Bowman with a final score of 8-4.

The duo also defeated Rockhurst University’s Renier and Briscoe 9-8. This was a comeback from the previous day when they were defeated by Midwestern State University’s Wuthrich and Jackson when they had a score of 8-6.

Meanwhile, freshman Ashton Lawrence and sophomore Erin Fritz combined to defeat Mowadi and Purdue 8-3.

The day before, Southern was shut out in doubles and singles by MSU with a score of 6-0.

Sophomore Erin Fritz had to forfeit due to injury in a singles match against MSU’s Wuthrich.

On April 15, Southern beat Rockhurst University with a team score of 2-1 in doubles, but lost with a score of 4-2 in singles with only Hall and Lawrence claiming wins.

The Lions were defeated 5-4 overall.

Southern faced Eastern New Mexico University April 16 and suffered another loss of 6-1.

Hall was the only Lion to claim a victory in the singles division.

They played St. Edwards University the same day and lost 5-0.

Southern’s current record now stands at 7-10.

The Lions will play in the MIAA Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Topeka.

Southern is also scheduled to play at Truman State University on Saturday.
