Lions earn wins

The women’s soccer team is off and running.

Although its record is at 2-2 so far, they have won their last two games. The losses came against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Lions’ two wins have come against the Missouri Western State University Griffons and Wayne (Neb.) State College.

On Sept. 2, the Lions faced MWSU in St. Joseph, beating them 2-0.

In the game, freshman midfielder Nikki Llewellyn scored the two goals to propel the team to its first victory of the season with its first two goals of the season.

Llewellyn scored unassisted in the 68th minute and off a penalty kick in the 78th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kaney Tyler recorded the shutout, earning four saves in the effort.

For the game against WSC, which was also the Lions’ home opener, Llewellyn again came through.

She scored two more goals in the 4-0 victory.

Llewellyn’s goals came in the 27th and 51st minutes. The first goal was off an assist by Christina Kleekamp, freshman defender/midfielder, and the second was unassisted.

Kleekamp and Lindsay Robinson, sophomore defender/midfielder, had unassisted goals in the 37th and 57th minutes, respectively.

With the second consecutive shutout, Tyler recorded her fifth career shutout, making her tied for second with Moe Ybarra on the all time shutout list for Missouri Southern.

At halftime, the Lions held a 2-0 lead, and they never looked back.

Southern’s next games are both home, Saturday against Augustana College at 11 a.m., and Sunday versus the University of South Dakota at 1 p.m.
