One local bar supports Missouri Southern.

Not only does Champs Bar and Grill show its Southern pride by sporting green and yellow in the poolroom, the bar also employs three students.

John Black, Chad Lind and Matt Comer all work part time as bartenders at Champs, but Comer doubles as doorman some nights.

Comer, senior mass communication major, said he likes working at Champs because he has gotten to hear so many good bands play on the patio.

Champs will have live music on the patio Thursday through Saturday every week until its Halloween party on Oct. 28. Then, the bar will host DeeJays and a costume contest.

After October, Champs will bring its music inside and “tone it down a little,” said Will Copeland, Champs manager.

“A lot of bands that play outside wouldn’t be fitting to have inside,” Copeland said. “But there will always be entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays. I’ll probably do a lot more acoustic stuff and maybe some Jazz.”

Champs has already scheduled several bands for October and plans to have at least two or three bands every Friday and Saturday. Upcoming events include an 80’s theme prom on Oct. 8, Vaginal Discharge, a local humor music group, on Oct. 14 and One Track Mind on Oct. 15.

On Friday, Copeland said he is having some friends play and on Saturday the patio will feature Shapeshift Revolution and Silver Stone.

Copeland also plans to have the Ben Miller band on the patio sometime in October, but Copeland said he is unsure of the exact date.

The cover charge to get on the patio is no more than three or four dollars.

But Champs isn’t just a music venue, it’s also a sports bar.

“One of the great things about Champs is that the patio and inside are two different atmospheres,” Copeland said.

Monday nights Champs features 25-cent wings and prizes during football games. Champs also has drink specials Monday through Saturday.

Champs is open from 4 p.m. until the game is over on Mondays and until 1:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Champs is located at 516 S Joplin St.
