Women’s soccer holds Western to one shot

Defeating the Griffons 6-1, the Missouri Southern women’s soccer team faced Missouri Western State University Oct. 3.

The Lions allowed only one shot in the match, which scored MWSU’s only goal.

Erin Gfeller, junior forward, led the Lions’ scoring with a hat trick. Two of her goals came in the 78th minute and the last in the 90th.

Jentri White, freshman midfielder/forward, assisted Gfeller’s first goal and Erin Whelan, sophomore midfielder/forward, assisted the last two.

Christina Kleekamp, freshman defender/midfielder, started the Lions’ scoring in the 22nd minute of a corner kick. She also scored the second goal in the 36th minute, with the assist by Lauren Kurelac, sophomore forward.

Kurelac also assisted Megan Walker’s goal in the 42nd minute of the match.

The Lions’ improved their record to 7-2-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the MIAA. They moved up one spot in the national rankings this week, improving to No. 16.

The Lions’ next challenge takes place Saturday as they take on Southwest Baptist University at 7 p.m. at Hal Bodon Field.

Wednesday they stay at home as Rockhurst University comes to Joplin.

That game will kick-off at 6 p.m.
