Two losses followed a five-game winning streak for Missouri Southern’s women’s basketball team.

Falling to 12-7 and 4-4 in the MIAA, the Lions lost on the road to Southwest Baptist University Jan. 24, 69-62.

Three Lions scored in the double digits in the loss.

Meghan Welch, freshman guard/forward, led the team with 16 points and four three-pointers. She shot six of 11 overall from the field.

Dacie Reutlinger, senior forward, scored 15 points for the Lions and grabbed seven rebounds.

Reutlinger was followed by Robin Kantin, sophomore guard, who earned 11 points but led the team in rebounds with 12.

Kantin, Marina Caran, junior guard, and Liz Burks, junior guard, earned four assists a piece against SBU.

On Jan. 21, the Lions took on Washburn University at home, losing 70-45.

The Lady Blues led by only five at the half but held Southern to just 13 points in the second.

“I think the first half, we didn’t believe in ourselves,” said Maryann Mitts, head women’s basketball coach.

Mitts said the Lions may not have thought they could keep up with WU, but they were doing it.

“In the second half, I felt like it was really important that we kept that momentum going,” she said.

Mitts said the Lady Blues took Southern out of its offensive rhythm, and the Lions started to play five one-on-one games. She said if the team played anyone like that, the end result would be similar, and that was the lesson the Lions would take from the WU game.

“This is something that you can’t carry around as baggage and hold on to forever,” Mitts said. “We’ve got to let it go right now; learn from it and move on.”

In the game, Reutlinger led the team with 10 points and was second in rebounds with four. Welch was next in points with eight, and Kantin followed with seven.

Kantin also led the team in rebounds, nabbing five.

WU had not lost a match since Jan. 22, 2005, when the Lions defeated them, 53-50.
