The softball team celebrates a scored run during the April 11 game against Pittsburg State University. The Lions won the first game in the double header 7-6.

On April 11, the Lions’ softball team split with the Pittsburg State Gorillas.

Missouri Southern won the first game 7-6, and lost the second 2-1.

In game one, the Lions had a 7-1 lead on the Gorillas, but the Gorillas made a rally, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth, all with two outs. Freshman pitcher Lacee Craig picked up the win for Southern, striking out six and walking four. The win was Craig’s 11th on the season (11-4).

In the second game, the Gorillas upended the Lions’ 2-1. PSU’s senior Anna Bott held the Lion’s at bay, only allowing three hits until the sixth inning. In the sixth inning, Southern’s junior left fielder Afton Horst singled to lead off the inning, then stole second. Freshman Angie Turner belted a double off of the wall to bring Horst in to tie the game at 1-1. In the seventh inning, the Gorillas got a runner on third, but PSU couldn’t find a way to score the runner as the rivals went into extra innings.

In the ninth inning, the Gorillas got the bases loaded with a walk to lead off the inning, then received two intentional walks with one out. PSU’s senior centerfielder Gregan Ketcham stole home to put the Gorillas up 2-1, which proved to be enough to win the game. Both pitchers for each team went all nine innings. Bott was the winning pitcher for PSU, and Lion Amy Schneider picked up the loss.

The Lions will be in action Saturday at the Pitt State Classic.

Game times are 9 a.m. against Southwest Baptist University, 10:30 a.m. against Missouri Valley and 1 p.m. against PSU. The Lions’ next home game will be April 18 against Central Arkansas at 5 p.m.

The Lions also picked up two more losses against the Emporia State Hornets on April 6.

In the first game, the Hornets hit the Lions 8-0.

The Lions came out with 15 at-bats, but had no runs. Pitchers Amy Schneider and Tara Curtis ran the Lion’s defensive game, keeping Schneider in for 4.1 innings.

The Hornets left with 24 at-bats, eight runs and 11 hits.

In the second game, the Lions again went out with a loss, leaving the Hornets with a score of 4-0.
