Closing their regular season, the Missouri Southern softball Lions lost a double-header on neutral ground.

On May 1, the Lions faced Missouri Western State University at Jennies Field in Warrensburg. The two-game series was a make-up from a rainout in Joplin.

MWSU took Game 1 5-4 and Game 2 by a score of 3-1.

Game 1 began with one Griffon run in the first three innings. Southern countered in the second when Andrea Childs, freshman shortstop, was brought in off a single by Amanda Godfrey, freshman third baseman.

MWSU scored one more in the fifth inning, but the Lions brought the game back to within one in the bottom of the inning. The first run was made by Godfrey off a sacrifice fly by Angie Turner, freshman catcher. The second came after a wild pitch, bringing in Kate Brittan, sophomore outfielder.

Southern tied the game in the seventh inning when J.T. Taylor, sophomore second baseman, was brought home by a single by Amanda Mitchell, freshman utility player.

The extra innings went scoreless until MWSU scored the final run in the 10th.

Lacee Craig, freshman pitcher, threw the complete game, giving her the loss for a 12-7 record.

Game 2 was scoreless until Turner hit a home run to lead off the fourth inning. MWSU tied the game in the seventh and won it with two runs in the 10th.

Amy Schneider, senior pitcher, completed the game. The loss gave her a 1-9 record.

The Lions end the season 17-21 overall and 2-14 in the MIAA.

They will compete Friday at Shawnee, Kan. in the MIAA Postseason Tournament as the No. 8 seed. Southern faces No. 1 seed Emporia State University.
