Two second-half goals secured a win for the Missouri Southern women’s soccer team Oct. 2.

The Lions defeated the Washburn University Lady Blues 3-1 at home.

Southern’s first goal came early in the first half as Sarah Sneed, senior midfielder, finished a cross from Tera Reisner, senior forward, in the 17th minute.

“I thought our seniors played a great game,” said Trevor Wachsman, women’s head coach.

“We have a lot of talent and play well together,” said Alese Woolard, senior goalkeeper.

The only goal against the Lions came in the 63rd minute.

The Lions retook the lead in the 72nd minute with a penalty kick that was the result of a WU handball.

Reisner took the kick, but missed the shot; however the assistant referee called WU goalkeeper, Jenna Hatlestad, with taking more than five steps off her line.

On the rekick, Reisner was able to find the net.

“We got a little fortunate on the call,” Wachsman said.

Southern’s final goal came in the 78th minute from Erin Whelan,

freshman midfielder/forward, with

an assist from Elisa Bryant,

senior midfielder/forward.

Wachsman said the team did some good things against WU. He said Woolard played great and kept the team organized in the back.

The Lions suffered a 4-2 loss, however, Oct. 6 at the hands of the Northeastern (Oklahoma) State University Lady Reds.

NSU pulled out to an early lead with its first two goals coming in the fourth and fifth minutes. The Lady Reds extended their lead with a goal in the 22nd minute and another in the 32nd minute.

The Lions stopped the Lady Reds shut out with a goal from Reisner in the 36th minute of the game, making the halftime score 4-1.

Southern kept NSU scoreless in the second half, and Angela Westphal, freshman midfielder, scored Southern’s second goal of the evening. Reisner assisted Westphal’s goal.

The women’s record stands at 6-4-1 and 4-2-1 in the MIAA.

Southern’s men’s soccer team also played Oct. 6. The Lions took on the NSU’s Redmen.

The Lions held the Redmen scoreless in the first half. NSU, however, scored three goals in the 59th, 60th and 62nd minutes to give them a 3-0 lead and the win.

The Lions’ Travis Haight, sophomore goalkeeper, earned six saves in the game.

The Lions as a team had 16 shots with six on goal.

The men’s record stands at 1-8-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the Southwest Soccer Conference.

The women’s next challenge takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bodon Field when the Lions play the University of Missouri-Rolla Miners. Thursday the women head to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist University.

The men travel to Springfield Sunday to play Drury University, then to Tahlequah, Okla. on Tuesday to again take on the NSU Redmen.
