Book Club is where everyone is welcome

Members of the International English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta will host a book club focusing on the book Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

The book was a number one book on the New York Times Bestseller list and a 2018 pick for the Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club.

“The goal of [Sigma Tau Delta] is to promote excellence in English, build a strong community within the English department, and promote literacy throughout the rest of campus and community at large,” explained Sarah Robbins junior English major.

This semester’s pick combines mystery with a coming of age tale, as it follows Kya, a young girl whose family abandoned her in a cabin along the North Carolina marsh.

Where the Crawdads Sing has a gripping storyline which tackles a lot of important themes, such as family dynamics and poverty, without being so dense that it feels like homework,” Robbins said.

The book club will meet three times: 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 26, March 26 and April 23, in the first floor of the Spiva Library near the coffee shop.

“When you are a college student, you don’t often get to meet anyone who isn’t your age and who isn’t in your department,” said Robbins “Through the community book club, I’ve gotten to meet a lot of really awesome people and hear from a diverse pool of opinions.”
