Week Squad hosts events with messages
Since forming last semester, the Missouri Southern Week Squad has been active in coordinating campus activities with a message.
The bad weather did not stop last Friday’s “Safe Super Bowl” activity, hosted by the MoSo Week Squad.
“I thought the Super Bowl could be an event that everybody takes a part in,” said Chelsey Hall, senior biochemistry major and coordinator of the event. “They all get together and have big parties, so I thought we could kick off the Super Bowl weekend with a fun, safe event too.”
Natalie Bruce, MoSo Week Squad president, said the event was also coordinated to raise awareness of gambling on the sport.
“There is a high use of gambling on the Super Bowl as far as making bets and we want to be responsible with that so they aren’t gambling away their student loans,” she said.
The MoSo Week Squad makes sure every event has a purpose, such as Healthy Relationships week from Monday, Feb. 9 through Friday, Feb. 13.
“We are encouraging students to be safe in their relationships, not only in their romantic relationships but in their friendships as well,” said Bruce.
The week begins with two $2 showings of The Vagina Monologues. Ninety percent of the proceeds will go to the Lafayette House and the remaining 10 percent will go to V-Day – an organization dedicated to ending violence against women.
“We bring The Vagina Monologues to campus as a part of Healthy Relationships Week because it is one of the largest philanthropies for stopping violence among women and girls in the world,” Bruce said. “While The Vagina Monologues is entertaining, it is educational and increases awareness about women’s issues.”
The performance will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9-10 in Corley Auditorium.
