Business’ have been getting a lot of flack lately based on the economy, but business majors are looking on a more positive presentation.

This semester, the Organ-izational Behavior class has been working on raising money to restore and bring attention to the memorial garden in the center of the Oval.

“We’re going to put up three plaques for Renard Johnson, Jon Hansen and Danny Sickles,” said Dr. Nanette Philibert, assistant professor of management.

The class has a history of service learning projects.

“In the past, classes have chosen global projects,” said Brista McManis, senior business management major. “This semester we chose to do something local. We are giving back to those who were lost and proving that they meant something to everybody.”

Some of the projects the class has participated in the past include sending books to Africa and filling a library at the Carthage Crisis Center.

Efforts to restore the memorial garden were not met with ease.

“Anytime you do a project you always think you have everything in order, but there are different loops you have to jump through,” said McManis. “We had to find different ways to fund the project.

“When you do a project it’s not just your own. You have to cooperate with other people.”

McManis said some of the restrictions the group faced included using only Missouri native plants and working with a limited budget, but the group wanted to persevere.

“We’ve run into some difficulties with the project but the main goal is to recognize an area that has basically been neglected,” she said. “Our goal was to renovate and add new plaques including plaques that tell what the area is, and to give back to the students and families for contributing to the university.”

Currently, the renovation efforts are about halfway finished according to Philibert. A tree is going to be placed in the center and the plaques will be in by the end of the semester. The class would like to thank all of the people and groups who contributed to the project.
