Put your dancing shoes on
The Equality Alliance will host a dance marathon at 8 p.m. tonight in Young Gymnasium to raise money for the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Elisabeth Glaser started the foundation because she contracted HIV from a blood transfusion that then passed on to her children.
“We decided to do the dance marathon to get our name out there,” said Erin Powers, senior psychology major.
The rules are simple: remain moving for six hours. There are three 10-minute breaks given to each participant. Those who participate are asked to raise $50 for the foundation and there is a $5 registration fee for food and drink.
“You can come just to watch the event or you can come to register to dance,” she said. “People who register to dance will have their own little area and it’s like a competition. You don’t necessarily have to have any dance moves or anything, but if you keep moving for the six hours there are prizes.”
The Equality Alliance is a new group on campus dedicated to make students more aware of inequalities on campus. The specific focus is the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transsexual (LGBT) Community.
“Our purpose is trying to get people to at least be accepting to the idea that people make choices in their life and that it doesn’t necessarily affect everyone,” Powers said.
