Lions quarterback Collin Howard hands off to fullback Anthon Aiono during Missouri Southern’s 23-7 loss to Washburn on Nov. 13.

The football Lions have wrapped up a 4-7 season after dropping their finale at home to Washburn University.

Southern’s season ended not with a bang, but a whimper as a forgettable 23-7 defeat ended the 2010 campaign. The Lions lone score came on a pass from Collin Howard to Kellen Cox, who caught eight passes for 107 yards on the day.

The Lions did manage to win two of the year’s last four games, finishing with two wins in MIAA play.

The low-point in the Lions’ season was without a doubt a five-game conference-opening losing streak that at one point dropped their record to 2-5.

Southern was outscored 168-85 in that stretch.

Perhaps the highlight of Southern’s season was a week-eight MIAA victory over Missouri Western, their it’s first of 2010. Hosting the Griffons in a rain-soaked contest, the Lions’ ground game carried them to a 23-6 victory.

Quarterback Collin Howard finished the season with 2196 yards passing, in addition to 11 touchdowns through the air. Howard was also picked off 14 times, but contributed six rushing touchdowns.

Kellen Cox enjoyed a breakout season, catching four touchdowns and 425 yards. Landon Zerkel also pulled down 763 yards despite missing time to injury.

Another note on the Lions’ season, nine players were named to All-MIAA teams as announced this week.

Sophomores Brandon Williams, defensive lineman, NeRonte Threatt and Zerkel, wide receivers, Kenny Smith, defensive lineman, and Cornell Gedward, running back, Seniors Dusty Bratzler, linebacker, Justin Cowper, defensive back, and Skyler Vandiver, safety, and junior Ian Saxton, center.
