College football ritual proves overrated on staffer’s first experience

I always knew that tailgating was kind of a big deal. I didn’t realize how big it was until I experienced it firsthand.

While I’m not a huge Arkansas Razorback fan, my friend and I thought it would be fun to go down to the game this past weekend, see our friend and have a grand old time.

The game didn’t start until 7 p.m. on Saturday, so I’m thinking we’d sleep in, be lazy and start tailgating around two or three.

I was wrong. We got there around noon.

By the time we arrived, pretty much everyone was already drunk and as I looked around,  I began to notice  that every tent had at least one one big screen TV.

That, to me, was ridiculous. I mean, if you wanted to watch all the games leading up to the Arkansas vs. Auburn game, why wouldn’t you just stay home and do it? It’d be cheaper and you’d get to lay on a couch instead of sitting on a hard metal chair.

Eventually the place became packed a sea of red and you could smell all the amazing barbeque and I began to think that I might like this tailgating thing after all.

Once again I was wrong. About two hours after we were there, you have all these drunk idiots running around screaming at random intervals “Woo Pig Sooie!” and “Go Arkansas!! Razorbacks!”

Do you remember that part in 101 Dalmatians where the dogs were trying to get the message that the puppies were being held in a barn in the country to Pongo and Perdita and one would howl to the next in line till finally it got back to the parents?

Yeah, that was these guys, except not as cool. One would yell and not five seconds later you’d have some other guy yell the same thing, like they thought they were being all witty and clever.

I had a headache and was ready for bed before we even went into the stadium.

I would have been plenty content having a nice day grilling out, watching the games and heading to stadium an hour or so before kick-off.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast at the game with my friends. The atmosphere in the stadium was unreal.

It’s just the before and after I’m not sold on.
