The Breeders announce reunion and spring tour
I just got some news from rollingstone.com that made me pinch myself. The Breeders are going on tour this spring!
The Breeders are an all-girl grunge band from the ‘90s. Check out their song “Cannonball.” I promise you’ve heard it.
Frontwoman and bassist, Kim Deal, is my personal hero. In the ‘80s when everyone else had sky high blond hair and neon blazers, she was already rockin’ baggy jeans and wore her dark, straight hair naturally.
She’s best known as the bassist of The Pixies, my favorite band. The story of how she joined the band is the coolest and seems like one of those rock history myths but its true. The Pixies put out an ad asking for someone who likes both Dusker Hu and Peter, Paul, and Mary. She was the only one who answered the ad, and even though she didn’t know how to play bass a lick, she joined and quickly learned.
The Pixies hit the scene in 1988 with their album Surfer Rosa (which is awesome—check out the song “Where is My Mind?” If you’ve seen Fight Club then you’ve heard it), and are often cited as ahead of their time in alternative music. David Bowie loves them so that’s a good enough reason to give ‘em a listen.
They spent the next seven years putting out music infused with elements of surf rock, noise rock, and a bunch of surreal psychedelic craziness. They’re really one of those bands where no two songs sound the same at all. It’s impossible to get bored of them. They gained a strong cult following, but never fully broke into the mainstream.
Anyway, in 1990, Deal went on to form The Breeders and continued kicking major booty. In 1993, The Breeders came out with their most successful album Last Splash.
The Pixies reunited in 2004 and are still going strong. They’ve been together longer now than their first time around and have gained more commercial success. I saw them in 2010 and seriously, the crowd was split 50/50 between old and new fans.
Even with The Pixies’ gigantic (lolz) success, I never thought The Breeders would reunite. For one thing, the band has gone through a ton of line-up changes, with Kim being the only continual member.
That being said, this spring’s tour is a reunion of the Last Splast lineup. The ladies will kick off the tour on May 2nd in Ohio, Deal’s home state.
So not only is Kim Deal a living legend, grunge girl icon, and a strong feminist songwriter, she’s from the Midwest! Represent!
