After a strong team defensive showing by the Lion’s soccer team this weekend, senior midfielder/defender Dana Wilhelm earned the honors of being named the MAIA Defensive Player of the Week.

“I was shocked and really excited, but I wouldn’t have gotten it if our team hadn’t come together and worked so hard to get the tie and win this past weekend,” said Wilhelm.

On Friday, the Lion’s played Central Oklahoma, the #2 ranked team in the conference, and held them to zero goals in a double-overtime draw. The Lion’s would follow that performance up with another shutout, this one over Northeastern State with a 2-0 win.

Wilhelm has played a big part in the Lion’s recent defensive success. After allowing seven goals in the first three matches, the Lion’s have held the opposition without a goal in their last three games.

Wilhelm came up with a save on a shot-on-goal attempt by Northeastern State when she cleared the ball after the goalkeeper had vacated the net.

Along with the strong defensive play, Wilhelm scored the winning goal in the match-up against Northeastern State.
