Joplin photogs join worldwide walk

Stopping to compose a photograph, Steve Russell, walk leader, points out photogenic spots along the 2013 Joplin Photowalk course in downtown Joplin on Sept. 25. Russell said each participant in the October 5 walk will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Mpix. Mpix, a division of MillerÕs Professional Imaging in Pittsburg, Kan., donated the gift certificate to the Joplin 2013 Photowalk.

The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a local chapter of the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk on Oct. 5. Local photographers will be among thousands of others in cities all over the world participating in photo walks that day.

The walk will begin at the Chamber of Commerce at 320 E. Fourth St. at 8:30 a.m. and will proceed through downtown Joplin giving photographers the opportunity to take pictures and communicate techniques. This will be the fourth year that Joplin has participated in the photo walk.

“It’s for all levels of photographers,” said Steve Russell, director of the Joseph Newman Innovation Center at the Chamber of Commerce.  “There will be professional photographers that do it for a living, but we’re also encouraging anyone from a student who has a camera and just has an interest in meeting other photographers and maybe getting some tips on how to be a better photographer to a person who just purchased a camera two weeks ago.”

Russell, a photographer, will guide the tour and point out specific places for the participants to snap photos to test their skills.

The photo walk concept was initiated six years ago by Scott Kelby, a world-renowned photographer and author.

It has grown outside of just the United States, to include over 1,300 cities all over the world.
