Lions prepare for spring
The softball team has been staying busy during its off-season, preparing for the regular season in the spring. The Lions have played Labette Community College, Neosho Community College, and had their final fall season game on Wednesday night against Coffeyville Community College.
The teams do not keep score for the fall season; the games are just scrimmages.
According to senior Shelby Romines, the team has performed well at the games in multiple aspects.
“We did a lot of good things, we hit the ball well, played solid defense and played really well together,” said Romines.
Within the last three games the Lions faced a variety of competition. With softball being a spring sport, when they step on the field for practice or scrimmages, each player is fighting for a spot.
“Everyone is working extremely hard to earn their spot, which makes us better as a team,” said Romines. “I think that will help us focus and improve as individuals and as a team.”
The Lions have added four freshmen to the squad and one transfer from Coffeyville. There is also a new addition to the coaching staff, former Missouri and USA Softball player Nicole Hudson. She will be moving to Joplin in January, but has traveled back and forth to some practices this fall.
Hudson was able to attend Wedneday’s game against Coffeyville and evaulate the team. The players are excited for Hudson to join the coaching staff as she adds a young female perspective.
“She will definitely hold us accountable and to a very high standard,” said Romines. “And she won’t allow us to give anything but our best.”
