Community takes plunge
In spite of an expected high of only 35 degrees, on Saturday, community members from the Joplin area will be running into the winter waters of Shoal Creek.
The Polar Bear Plunge, hosted by the Joplin and Carthage Police Departments, will be held this Saturday at Zan’s Creekside Campground outside Joplin.
Participants must raise $75 in order to take the plunge. All proceeds go to benefit the Special Olympics to provide sports programs for those with developmental disabilities.
Plungers this year include local radio talents Randy Brooks and MSSU alum Kaylee Cole from the Kix 102.5 morning show. Brooks and Cole promised to take the plunge once their Facebook page received 10,000 likes, and with the help of the Joplin community they reached their goal on Jan. 27.
Registration for the event starts at noon and the plunging will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with awards to follow.
Your donation will support the student journalists of Missouri Southern State University. Your contribution will allow us to purchase equipment and cover our annual website hosting costs.
