Senate debates appropriation requests from RSOs
Amid the recent commotion over the vote on the ROAR fund, Student Senate still had regular duties to carry out on Wednesday evening, which included the vote on six different appropriation requests by registered student organizations.
The first appropriation brought before Senate was for $100, requested by the Equality Alliance. The money is partial reimbursement of travel expenses for four members of the group who performed in a recent drag show sponsored by the organization. Groups may receive up to $1,000 in funding each semester.
Despite passing unanimously through the finance committee the previous week, a 10-minute debate ensued on whether the money should be given to the organization.
“I’ll be the first to admit along with Senator Garr that this probably isn’t the most well-written proposal, but if it were any other organization that was wanting to promote their cause, we wouldn’t even be having this debate,” said Parliamentarian Raymond Dunaway.
Cory Garr replied, “I want to reject the sentiment by Raymond that this has anything to do with what kind of group it is and I think that is completely off-base.”
The appropriation was eventually approved, but received three “no” votes.
The five other organizations requesting funds on Wednesday were all approved for the full $1,000.
The groups are the Southern Clay Club, the Kinesiology Club, Pi Beta Lambda, the Psychology Honor Society and the Psychology Club. Each group plans to use the money for travel expenses to conferences requiring overnight lodging.
