Student organizations Kappa Alpha Order and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) have been collecting clothing and shoes to donate to organizations to help others in need.

Kappa Alpha Order

Kappa Alpha Order (KA), a fraternity at Missouri Southern, is hosting a clothing drive for Goodwill of Joplin. With a goal to collect 1,000 pounds of clothes for those who are less fortunate, KA is doing its share to give back to the community.

“A lot of people who go to Missouri Southern are fortunate enough to go to college, but not only that, have clothes on their back and a roof overhead,” said Evan Moore, senior criminal justice major and president of KA. “There [are] a lot of people in Joplin, and especially around the United States, who don’t even have a pair of shoes to wear.”

Moore came up with the idea when thinking about how people store or throw away old clothes, when there are children and adults who could use them.

According to Moore, he wanted to do something that would not only help one organization, but something that would help the people around the community.

“I thought the clothing drive was something that could really help women, children … and even infants, have another set of clothes, or even their first set of clothes,” he said.

Donations will be accepted through April 18 and can be dropped off at the Campus Activities Board (CAB) office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clothes will be collected at the end of each day and for those who are unable to drop their clothes off at the CAB office, KA will pick up clothes at people’s residences. For more information contact Moore at (262) 412-3370.

PRSSA

The Missouri Southern PRSSA chapter has been collecting shoes to donate to a global not-for-profit institution dedicated to fighting the impact and perpetuation of poverty, Soles4Souls.

PRSSA has collected an estimated 400 pairs of shoes.

“The campaign has gone really well,” said Brodie Skelton, sophomore nursing major. “We have definitely gotten more donations than I thought we would.”

Donation boxes are located in Hearnes Hall, Webster Hall, Billingsly Student Center, Plaster Hall, and Spiva Library. The Soles4Soles campaign will end April 11.
