Sigma Alpha Epsilon

“There will never be a nigger in SAE. There will never be a nigger in SAE. You can hang them from a tree but they’ll never sign with me, there will never be a nigger in SAE.”

I’ll be honest. I’ve watched that video five, 10, maybe 20 times. And let me tell you, that is one of the cruelest, inhumane, bloodthirsty videos I’ve ever watched in my two decades on this planet. Listening to the joy, pleasure and gratification those students got from that chant hurt. And if you have any decency in your heart, regardless of color, you should be hurt too.

On March 8, a video surfaced out of the University of Oklahoma at Norman of a group of young Caucasian students from the fraternity SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) in formal wear riding a bus and singing a chant laden with anti-black slurs and a reference to lynching. The lyrics vow that the fraternity, SAE, will never have black members. Joyous young men and women clap their hands and laugh as they sing along. A second video surfaced the following Monday.

Immediately after the videos surfaced, the University of Oklahoma, on March 9, severed its ties to one of the nation’s largest college fraternities and ordered the campus chapter to vacate its fraternity house.

University President David L. Boren said members of the fraternity had until midnight on Tuesday to remove their personal belongings from the chapter house.

“These people have acted in a way that is absolutely reprehensible and disgraceful,” Boren said at a predawn rally on the campus. Several hundred people came out to protest the fraternity members’ actions.

Boren should be applauded for his working in handling this situation, and I’m glad to see him go a step further. Not only was the chapter house closed, but everyone in the video who can be identified was also expelled immediately. I’m glad to see Boren drop the hammer on each and every last one of these foolhardy humans — expelled for life from the University of Oklahoma!

These half-witted human beings sang this chant in unison. This chant sounded like it had been sung and rehearsed hundreds of times. It’s hard to even fathom how disgusting and idiotic that not just one person, but a whole group of people can open their mouths in unison and say such cringe-worthy words.

And as for SAE, SAE should strip every person involved of their membership and ban them for life. They shouldn’t be able to pledge another day in their lives.

But what really gets me going is that this isn’t SAE’s first run in with controversy. This fraternity, over the last three years, has a way of making the wrong headlines.

In 2013, the chapter at Washington University in St. Louis was suspended because pledges were using racial slurs. In 2014, the Clemson University chapter was suspended following a “Cripmas” party where students dressed as gang members. Again, in 2014, the University of Arizona chapter was suspended after members allegedly assaulted students belonging to a Jewish fraternity.

The ignorance gets better.

In 2014, the Arizona State University chapter threw what they called the “MLK Black Party,” which featured drinking from watermelon cups, dressing in basketball jerseys, throwing up gang signs and more ignorant shenanigans.

How dare SAE? How do you consistently have recurring issues dealing with cultural controversy? Why does it seem like SAE plays the role of reactors instead of trying to be proactive in changing the culture within their own fraternity? SAE disgusts me on so many levels. They are as foul and corrupt as those who enjoyed that inane and asinine chant. Every SAE chapter in America should be suspended for the remainder of the year.

People are not born racist, it’s something their taught. It’s a response that is learned and passed down from one idiot to another. It’s time to break that chain.
