As the sun sets and stadium lights blaze, the anticipation for tomorrow night’s game between the Missouri Southern State University Lions and the Pittsburg State Gorillas reaches a fever pitch. This game is expected to draw a significant crowd of student, fans, and community members.
The emotional stakes are high for players and coaches alike. Cornerback Daimon Cassseus expressed a determined mindset going into the game, stating, “We are here to take care of business.” Meanwhile, wide receiver Draper Parker emphasized the importance of focus and preparation, noting, “Team preparation was a big part, and now we will focus on the game. No matter the magnitude of the game, it’s still just another game at the end of the day.”
Both Casseus and Parker shared their pre-game must do’s include moments of reflection and motivation. They cited a quick word with God, their families, and particularly their mothers as essential to their mental preparation before hitting the field.
These two rivals have played on the field against each other since 1968 (aside from the 2020 Covid season). With the Gorillas taking the win for the last 9 years. Looking ahead, both players are ready to face any challenges that may arise. “Whether a win or a loss, we will take this game head-on and approach each opponent as they come.”
Taking a look at the lions all-time records, they have improved overall throughout the last five years, coming in at 1-10 in 2018, 1-9 in 2019, 3-8 in 2021, 4-7 in 2022, and 5-6 in 2023. MSSU’s game against Midwestern State University Texas last Thursday night, August 29, ended in a loss of 18-11, but Cassesus says the lions will continue forward no matter the outcome, “We will not dwell on the past and will take whatever happens as a learning experience.”
Make sure to come and attend what promises to be an exhilarating game. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday September 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fred G. Hughes Stadium. Don’t miss out on the excitement of the first Missouri Southern State University home game.
