Are you a fan of dancing, wearing headphones, and getting your face painted? Then Missouri Southern State University has an event for you. MSSU Campus Activities Board (CAB) is hosting an event for Southern Welcome called the Silent Disco and Face Painting Extravaganza. On August 15th at 9:00 p.m., CAB invites incoming freshmen and current students to socialize and celebrate the start of a new semester.
A Silent Disco is an event where participants put on headphones that connect to different music stations which contain a specialized playlist with different genres of music. Students can flip through music stations or request songs to play. Each music station is given a color, and your headphones will light up with the color corresponding to the music station. Students can easily swap to a different colored station to change the tune.
Kaylea Furgerson, the Director of CAB, says it’s a fun event where students can hang out and enjoy listening to a wide variety of music while also taking the pressure off having an awkward experience while jamming out.
“You can have different stations and it’s not always the same music, but then everyone just kind of gets to dance and listen to the music of their choice and then sometimes it’s funny because, hypothetically, that could be Pitbull playing on one station and then Cotton Eye Joe playing on another.”
This isn’t the first time the event has taken place on campus. Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment failures and bad timing the first time around, Furgerson took some convincing to bring it back.
“I kind of vowed we would never have a silent disco again, but they begged me enough that I was like, fine, we’ll do it for Southern Welcome. So, if it turns out really well, you can thank them and thank me.”
(Kaylea has expressed, in jest, that if the event does not go well, she will not be responsible for it.)
To ensure the success of the event, Amber Mork, a member of the executive council for CAB, says they will set up the event a day early to make sure everything is good to go. She participated in the last Silent disco and says it is a great chance to create friendships.
“It’s a really great way to get to know some people without the pressure of being forced to talk to people. If Cotton Eye Joe is playing on one station and you notice this group of people are there, you could just go over there, join them, dance with them, and then boom, you’ve got a circle of friends.”
The Silent Disco and Face Painting Extravaganza will take place on Thursday, August 15th from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Mayes Student Life Center. Make sure to have the Lion Link App or scan the QR Code at the event and get ready to dance!
