Saturday the 2-1 Lions would take on the 0-3 Northeastern state Riverhawks.
The Lions would enter the game on a two game winning streak.
The Lions would strike first on a 75 yard touchdown drive capped off with a 3 yard Anthodius Ashley touchdown run.
“I love the way we started in the first half we came out hot,” MSSU head coach Atiba Bradley said
After an Evrin Hawkins interception the Lions would go on a 94 yard touchdown drive capped off by a 18 yard touchdown pass from Luke Sampson to Akeem Gilmore. To make the score 14-0.
“I had a big week of film study. I knew that play was going to come and when it presented itself I just made the play. I also want to thank the D-line for getting to the quarterback which forced him to make a bad throw” Hawkins said.
The Lions would open the scoring in the second half on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Gilmore to JarMichael Cooper. The Lions would also score on a Sampson 7 yard touchdown run in the third to make the score 28-0.
“I had to go out there and show them I have some legs and that they work,” Sampson said.
The Lions would score on a scoop and score after Maurion Clemons got a strip sack then Jermaine Young Jr. would take it to the house.
“That right there was enjoyable, I am just glad he (Young Jr.) didn’t get caught,” Hawkins said.
“He (Young Jr.) is a kid that’s fought his butt off and he is rushing the passer really well for us. And for him to get a touchdown is huge, ” Bradley said.
After that score the Lions starters wouldn’t see the field again giving some of the younger guys an opportunity
“It’s very valuable because if one of the older guys goes down we need them ready to step up and be there for us,” Hawkins said.
Isaac Kitrell would finish the scoring for the Lions in the fourth quarter on a 25 yard quarterback keeper.
“Man that was awesome, Isaac man he is my guy it was great to see him get in there, so that was a really fun moment,” Sampson said.
The Lions advance to 3-1 on the year and will be on the road next week taking on the 1-3 Central Oklahoma Bronchos
“Great game, that’s the way you handle business,” Bradley said.
