Missouri Southern’s 2023 Themed Semester spotlights Ireland with various diverse events including guest speakers, book signings, musical performances, and even a a unique book club and film festival.
MSSU has had a lot of exciting events happen so far in the semester. They started off with learning about Ireland’s diverse history with Jim Carney’s Zoom presentation,“Games of the People;” which is all the interesting facts about the many different Irish games and sports. Students were able to try out their Gaelic Football skills on the campus Oval.
Dr. Dominic Buccieri discussed Ireland’s financial system in his lecture about the “Celtic Tiger.” Two beautiful Celtic performances were held both here on campus and at Webb City’s, Just A Taste. In addition to this lecture, Dr. Mouser also spoke about the “Book of Kells,” and Dr. Fisher about “The Irish in Latin America.”
Next week, we will learn more about Molly Brown and the Irish in the West as the Director of Historic Denver’s Molly Brown House Museum, Andrea Malcomb, presents this topic at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26.
Another round of “Pot O’ Gold Trivia Night” will be held Wednesday, September 27, from 4-6 p.m.
The first Book Club meeting will be held at the Bookhouse Cinema at 6 p.m., Thursday, September 28. The book chosen for this club meeting, Bog Child, was written by Siobhan Dowd and is set in 1981 Ireland who follows a young man as he struggles to navigate both the border between childhood and adulthood.
Following the Book Club meeting, “The Potato Pathogen” makes its way to Corley Auditorium in Webster Hall on Friday, September 29 at 10 a.m. with Dr. Bechtold.
