In 1995, Missouri Southern signed a bill declaring that the university would develop an academic support program and service activities that would establish international and global education as a distinctive theme of its mission. One of the main ways this was executed was by hosting a unique themed semester program every fall.
The International Studies department selected one country or region of the world to be the focus of intensive study for that semester. For Fall 2023, they have chosen to shine the spotlight on Ireland.
Throughout this semester, there will be a variety of events scheduled for students to attend. Some of these include listening to guest speakers, attending book signings, and listening to musical performances. Along with this, there will also be a book club and a unique film festival featuring Ireland-related films and books!
Alen MacWeeney’s, “Finding Inspiration: Dublin Photographs and Paintings from 1963 to 2020,” exhibition will be held in Spiva Art Gallery now until October 11.
This coming week, MSSU will dive into Ireland’s diverse history of their “games of the people.” On Tuesday, September 12, Jim Carney will be live via Zoom where he will be discussing different Irish games and sports. A live stream will be held in Corley Auditorium beginning at 9:30 AM.
Wednesday, September 13 at 10 a.m., Missouri Southern’s Dr. Dominic Buccieri will lead a discussion about the interplay between globalization, the financial system, and European integration that has led to Ireland’s economic success.
On Thursday, September 14, at 3 p.m., students will have the exciting opportunity to put their Gaelic Football skills to the test. Stop by the Oval to experience the rich sporting heritage of Ireland firsthand.
For more information on the Ireland-themed events taking place each week, visit The Chart’s social media pages or head to MSSU.edu for the complete event schedule.
