Golf team goes for the hole, misses by close shot at tourney
The Lions chipped ahead of competition to finish second in the Truman Bulldog Classic.
Geir Askvik shot 148 (74-74) total for the two days and led the golf team. The Lions shot 597 (296-301) total for the two days.
“The tournament went good,” said Andrew Koehler, junior pre-medicine major. “A lot of good things came out of the tournament; I think it was a descent showing for our team.”
Koehler said the team learned things it will need to work on for future tournaments.
“We found out first that the team shoots well,” he said. “As of now we need to concentrate on our short game and getting more affluent with telling the difference between 50 to 60 yards.”
Koehler said within 15 yards of the green, the team loses strokes with its chipping and putting.
“We’re tuning up a little more,” he said.
The team is focusing on practice. Koehler said people think the team goes to the links and plays a couple of rounds. The Lions are now focusing on going to the driving range and practicing its drives and short shots. He said the team has more of a “practice schedule” now.
Koehler shot 151 (76-75) and tied for 14th along with Kort Sonnentag from Winona State University. Askvik placed seventh. Travis Stockholm shot 149 (72-77) and tied for eighth along with Chris McGown from Washburn University and with Brice Garnett from Missouri Western State College.
Junior Andrew Watts shot 156 (75-81) and tied for 25th along with Tyler Phillips who played as an individual from Truman State University.
Junior Danny Sinksen tied for 11th with Craig Fisher from WU and Jason Bertram from TSU shooting 150 (75-75).
The first place team for the tournament was Central Missouri State University, shooting 583 (292-291). Missouri Southern placed first out of four teams during the Norsemen Invitation held at Peoria Ridge Golf Course and sponsored by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. The Lions shot 594 (298-296) at the tournament.
The next tournament for the Lions is Sept. 29-30 at the Northeastern State Classic in Tahlequah.
Then on Oct. 6-7 Missouri Southern hosts the Southern Fall Classic held at Loma Linda Country Club. The Lions finish out the fall season at the Drury Fall Classic Oct. 13-14.
