Softball dropped its first three games this past weekend at the West Texas A&M Invitational before splitting its finally two games on Saturday. The Lions took down MIAA opponent, Fort Hays State, 16-14 in their first game on Saturday.  So far the Lions have gotten off to a slow start this season going 2-9, but beating the ninth ranked team in the conference was a big win for the tenth ranked Lions. Senior Sydney Koch had this to say, ”Any win is a victory especially if its an MIAA opponent, but I believe there will be many more to come.”

This weekend the Lions head down to UAM Division II Softball Classic hosted in Bentonville, AR. The tournament will be a grind for the Lions. They will once again have to play six games in just three days, but the lions are expecting to turn it around this weekend Koch also added, “We just need all the pieces to click at the same time, our bats are working when our pitching isn’t, or our defense isn’t while our pitching is. We just need hard work at practice and more experience and it’ll come.” Junior Abi Corbett who is leading the team in average, slugging, and on base percentage also added, “Something we’re trying to hammer in is doing the little things right… it seems simple in practice, but it can be the difference between being a good team and being a great team.”

The Lions kick off the UAM Division II Softball Classic this Friday. Their first match up will be against Drury University at 11:00 a.m. followed by Henderson State at 3:00 p.m. Saturday will be another double header starting against the University of Illinois at Springfield followed by the University of Missouri at St. Louis for the second game. The Lions will wrap up the weekend with its final two games on Sunday against Rockhurst University and Southern Arkansas.
