Lions miss sting from Hornets
The Lions didn’t let the Emporia State University Hornets sting them as they went for a 2-2 tie in double overtime Oct. 10.
“The tie says something for the parity in the conference,” said Trevor Wachsman, women’s soccer coach.
With the Lions regular goalie gone, fill-in Jennifer Griest had her first shot at playing goalie.
“She did a real good job, she basically volunteered and it was awesome of her to take that challenge on,” Wachsman said.
Tera Reisner, junior forward, had both goals, and Elisa Bryant, senior forward, had the assists.
A few days later, Oct. 12, the Lions didn’t roar as loud, with a 3-2 loss to Washburn University.
“They (Washburn) were coming off their first conference win and had some confidence,” Wachsman said.
With a conference record of 2-3-3, the Lions have a promising chance of continuing.
“As a team, I’d like us to go to the national tournament,” Bryant said. “We are more of a team this year.”
Wachsman keeps talking to the women about heart, and bringing consistency to their play.
“[We need] a lot more heart on the field, and I feel we are on the right track,” Bryant said. “The intensity during the games will pick up 100 percent.”
“When we play hard we are able to possess the ball and create a lot of quality chances on goal,” Wachsman said. “Right now, we are trying to bring consistency to our play. That’s our biggest goal. Some games we play as good as any other team out there, and other games it just isn’t there.”
The University of Missouri-Rolla hosts the Lions at 7 p.m. Friday. The Lions have a home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Southwest Baptist University. Senior night is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 versus ESU.
“We need to score a little more,” Bryant said. “We need to go out on the field and work as one unit instead of individuals.”
