Softball team prepares for weekend tournaments
The Missouri Southern softball team came together during the tournament held Sept. 20 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Kristen Jennings, freshman catcher, said the tournament went well. The Lions started off the weekend tournament losing to Neosho County Community College, 8-4.
“I think it (the tournament) went really well,” said Jennifer Jimerson, head softball coach. “Fall games are about finding out what needs improvements.”
The Lions won the next two games. Southern defeated Division I team Southwest Missouri State University, 1-3.
The team also defeated Truman State University, 1-0.
“We finally beat Truman,” Jennings said “Coach Turner (assistant softball coach) was excited because of the win.”
Saturday and Sunday the softball team plays a tournament at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
“I haven’t heard anything about NEO,” Jennings said.
“People are excited about the games.”
After the tournament Jimerson said the team is “headed in the right direction.”
“We played some good games,” she said. “We’re a young team, we haven’t quite gelled yet. We’ve only been practicing for a month, so we’re still a young team.”
Jennings said she believes the team came together and “gelled really well.”
Jimerson said the team does only a few fall tournaments.
The tournaments show what improvements the team needs to work on during the fall and winter practices, she said.
After the tournament, the Lions play an alumni game with a barbecue before the game.
