Men’s indoor track sprints toward MIAA meet
The men’s indoor track and field team has made it through three meets so far this season and has just two left before the MIAA conference championship meet. The championship meet will be held at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center this year.
The Lions have several players that qualify for provisionals this year, giving them the opportunity to make the national meet at the end of the indoor season.
Matt Campbell, sophomore pole vaulter, is currently ranked third in the nation among Division II competitors, while Chris Turner, senior, is ranked 10th nationally. Michael Stewart, junior triple jumper, has also qualified for provisionals and is ranked seventh in the nation. Arley Smith, junior weight thrower, is also ranked nationally and sits at number seven.
Southern has three meets left to participate in before the conference championships on Feb 27-28. On Friday and Saturday, the team will compete in the Baymont Inn/Fazoli’s Open at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Also during the weekend, the team will have representatives in Fayetteville to compete in the Tyson Invitational.
On Feb. 21 the team will finish the regular season in Norman, Okla., at the University of Oklahoma Invitational. From there, it will compete in the MIAA Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28, with the NCAA Division II Championships scheduled for March 12-13 in Boston, Mass.
